Brokers do not set carrier rates. Your vehicle is posted to a national dispatch board and carriers choose which loads to take, based on where their truck already is and what else is on the deck. That is a live market, and it reprices constantly.
National averages are only rough reference points because they blend different distances, vehicle sizes, routes, transport types, and seasons. A short regional move and a coast-to-coast shipment are not the same service, so a route-specific quote is more useful than a single national number.

What actually moves your price
Distance
The largest single factor — though not linearly. The total rises with distance while the cost per mile falls, because loading, paperwork and dispatch cost the same on a short move as a long one.
Route density
The biggest hidden factor. Busy corridors between major metros have carriers competing for loads. Rural origins and destinations do not, and they price accordingly on identical mileage.
Vehicle size and weight
Deck space is what carriers actually sell. A three-row SUV or full-size pickup occupies more of the trailer than a sedan and prices higher.
Transport type
Enclosed costs more than open. Expedited costs more than standard. A single-car trailer costs more again, because your vehicle travels alone.
Operability
A vehicle that does not run needs a winch; one that will not roll needs a forklift. Both narrow the pool of carriers who can take the load.
Season and timing
Seasonality varies by corridor. Relocations, holidays, weather, and snowbird traffic can tighten capacity in one direction while leaving more availability in another. A wider pickup window usually gives dispatch more options.
Is shipping cheaper than driving?
Over long distances, shipping can be competitive once you count fuel, accommodation, meals, time away from work, and the mileage and wear added to the vehicle. Over short distances, driving may cost less.
The factor people forget: a cross-country drive puts thousands of miles of depreciation on the car. On a leased vehicle with a mileage cap, that alone can exceed what shipping would have cost.
Why the cheapest quote is often the most expensive
A quote well below market for your lane is a bid no driver will accept. What happens next is predictable: the load sits uncovered, your date slips, and eventually you are asked for more money or you rebook elsewhere having lost a week.
When comparing quotes, check three things — the same transport type, the same deposit terms, and whether the price is locked or subject to change after booking. Those three explain almost every difference between two numbers.

Why will you not publish a price list?
